Cradle cap

Skin condition

Cradle cap, or pityriasis capitis, is a form of childhood seborrheic dermatitis. It is a very common, non-inflammatory, chronic but self-limiting skin condition, which usually appears between the third week and the first months of life, with a peak incidence around 3 months. The precise causes are not known, but the role of maternal hormones is hypothesized, which excessively stimulate the sebaceous glands of the newborn through fetal circulation. This excess of sebum promotes the accumulation of dead cells that remain adherent to the skin.

Another factor involved is the presence of the Malassezia yeast, in particular the M. globosa and M. restricta species, detected in most cases. This microorganism feeds on sebum and leaves residues of unsaturated fatty acids, which can contribute to the appearance of cradle cap. However, Malassezia is also present in healthy subjects, also suggesting an individual predisposition.

Incidence

  • Frequent in the first months of life.
  • Peak of 70% around the third month and then the incidence decreases progressively during the first year.
  • About 7% of children are affected at two years.
  • Cradle cap is rare after the age of four.

Symptoms

What?

Reddened plaques covered with yellowish and greasy scales.

Where?

Areas rich in sebaceous glands.

Cradle cap does not cause itching or pain, and does not interfere with the sleep or feeding of the newborn. In some cases, there may be a familial predisposition to other atopic conditions such as dermatitis or asthma.
