Innovative anti-redness active ingredients

Soothing Polyphenols

Polyphenols are a large family of bioactive molecules of plant origin, naturally produced by plants as a protection system against environmental stresses, such as UV radiation, oxidizing agents and external aggressions.

From a chemical point of view, they are characterized by the presence of phenolic structures; in particular, their formula includes two aromatic rings, referred to as A and B, and a third non-aromatic ring, C.¹ From a biological point of view, polyphenols represent one of the most studied groups of compounds in the dermatological field for their ability to interact with the physiological mechanisms of the skin.²

Applied topically, polyphenols have a predominantly antioxidant and modulating action. They counteract oxidative stress, one of the main factors involved in skin irritation and alteration of the epidermal barrier. This activity is particularly relevant in the management of sensitive and reactive skin, where the excess of free radicals and inflammatory mediators can promote the appearance of persistent redness.²

Within this broad category, some polyphenols show a specific soothing and anti-redness action. By acting on the modulation of skin irritation, they help reduce the reactivity of the tissues and the feeling of discomfort typical of couperosis-prone skin. The soothing effect progressively translates into a visibly more uniform skin that is less prone to widespread redness.³

Particular attention is now focused on polyphenols obtained from selected natural sources, such as those deriving from plant upcycling processes, which make it possible to enhance botanical by-products rich in functional molecules.⁴ Alongside the plant world, polyphenols derived from the mushroom kingdom are also particularly innovative, currently the subject of increasing research due to the high concentration of compounds with soothing and protective activity.⁵ These sources represent a concrete example of how scientific research and sustainability can converge in the development of advanced dermocosmetic formulations.

Neutralizing Pigments

In addition to the biological action of the active molecules, the treatment of redness can also be supported by an immediate visual corrective effect. The presence of green pigments of natural origin is based on the principles of color theory and dermatological camouflage, according to which complementary colors tend to neutralize each other. In particular, green, a complementary color to red, helps to optically mask redness, immediately improving the uniformity and appearance of the complexion.⁶

In AR Defense, both levels of intervention are combined within a single formulation. The soothing polyphenols from upcycling and Chaga mushroom act on the biological mechanisms responsible for skin sensitivity and redness, while the green color is given by the presence of cupric chlorophyll, which contributes to an immediate corrective effect. The result is a comprehensive approach to the treatment of couperosis-prone skin, in which science and visual perception work in synergy to improve skin comfort and uniformity.
